Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice
Shunryu Suzuki

This slim book is one of the most highly regarded accounts of Zen practice in English. It based on a series of informal talks by Shunryu Suzuki about how to practice Zen, including posture and breathing. The chapters are grouped under the headings of Right Practice, Right Attitude, and Right Understanding, three of the steps of the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path. Although this is a book about Zen meditation and practice, there is much that will be helpful regardless of one’s background. “Beginner’s mind” is the open mind that allows for both doubt and possibility, and Suzuki shows this attitude clearly in his writing. The style is simple and readable, with examples taken from ordinary, everyday situations. Although Suzuki originally came from Japan, he spent many years in America, and he had a real gift for making Zen accessible to Westerners. In an informal, conversational tone, this book offers a clear and conherent translation of the Zen practice with most of its subtleties intact. Susuki makes extensive use of anecdote and analogy to put across some of the more esoteric aspects of the philosophy.
